Restored Theatre and X-LAM Structure Transform Historic School into Community Hub

Project in-detail

The restoration of the original theatre alongside the use of X-LAM construction revives the historic Omuli Building, transforming it into a dynamic community hub focused on cultural engagement and education.
5 key facts about this project
01
Restoration of the original theatre serves as a cultural centerpiece for the museum.
02
X-LAM wall construction enhances structural efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The Omuli Building, constructed in 1975 as a school, is set to become the Omuli Horse Museum. Located in an area rich in culture, this change aims to bring new life to the building while honoring its educational history. The design blends the past of the school with the needs of a modern museum, making it a space for community interaction and cultural activities.

Historical Resurgence

A key part of the design is the restoration of the original theatre and stage, which were important elements of the Omuli School. By restoring these features, the project keeps a piece of history alive while providing a focal point for cultural events. This brings a sense of continuity, allowing visitors to connect with the building's story as a place of learning and gathering.

Spatial Dynamics

The layout carefully separates different areas within the museum. Public spaces for visitors are clearly defined, while common areas are designed for social interactions. Private spaces offer quiet reflection. Accessibility is addressed with staircases and lifts throughout the building. An outdoor performance area is included to host events, enhancing the museum's role as a community center.

Material Selection

X-LAM walls are chosen for their structural efficiency and sustainability. Wood pillars add both visual interest and stability to the design. These materials support a responsible approach to construction while maintaining a connection to the building's original purpose.

Interactive Engagement

Workshop and study rooms are integrated into the design to encourage hands-on experiences with exhibits. These spaces support a range of activities, from educational workshops to artist residencies, contributing to the museum’s identity as a vibrant cultural center. The arrangement allows visitors to engage actively with the exhibits, ensuring a lively atmosphere that respects the building’s educational roots.

The evolution of the Omuli Building highlights the thoughtful integration of historical elements, clear spatial organization, and careful material choices. Attention to these details allows the museum to serve the community’s cultural needs while inviting visitors to experience a lasting link to the past through the restored theatre and other features.
