The Last Genocide Memorial is an important site dedicated to remembering those lost to genocide. Located in a peaceful meadow, the memorial is designed to encourage reflection and personal connection. At its center is a tree that symbolizes resilience and serves as a poignant reminder of the emotional weight of remembrance. The overall concept aims to create a space where nature and personal experiences of loss intersect, inviting visitors to engage deeply with their feelings.

Central Tree and Symbolism

A significant aspect of the memorial is the tree that stands prominently in the meadow. This tree represents not only the lives lost but also the lasting impact of grief. As it sways gently in the wind, moving in all directions, it highlights the ongoing nature of mourning. The tree acts as a living memorial, serving as a constant reminder of community resilience despite past tragedies.

Spatial Arrangement and Visitor Experience

The design includes an open meadow surrounding the tree, creating an inviting space for visitors. This arrangement promotes quiet reflection, allowing people to connect with their own experiences of loss. The layout encourages individuals to linger and contemplate, fostering an atmosphere of shared remembrance. It enhances the memorial's role as a gathering point for the community, emphasizing the healing that can occur when people come together.

Materiality and Aesthetic

Material choices are essential to the memorial's design and function. A stainless steel edging system offers a modern frame that outlines the landscape. The use of limestone gravel creates a natural surface that blends well with the setting. Polished white concrete adds a contemporary touch, symbolizing purity and reflection. Western red cedar introduces warmth and a comfortable texture, while stainless steel column bases provide structural support and align with the overall modern design.

The combination of these elements results in a space that invites contemplation and honors the lives it remembers. Attention to detail is evident in how the tree integrates with its surroundings. Together, these features create a calm atmosphere that encourages visitors to reflect and pay tribute in their own way.
