EIVIÐBÓK, known as the ETERNAL BOOK, is located in Iceland and captures the spirit of literature and community. The design draws inspiration from the idea of an open book, influencing both its appearance and functionality. The building serves as a gathering space that supports education and agricultural practices, fitting comfortably within its natural surroundings.

Architecture Concept

The design features a roundabout that includes a greenhouse plant nursery and a small lake. This lake adds to the visual appeal and helps regulate moisture in the air, creating a healthy environment for plants and visitors. The entrance hall is designed for easy access, with an information desk and ramps that lead to an upper terrace, allowing for smooth movement throughout different areas of the building.

Functional Spaces

EIVIÐBÓK is designed to serve multiple purposes. The second level of the greenhouse acts as a dining space, featuring 25 tables that can accommodate around 100 diners. This setup encourages communal meals and provides views into the greenhouse, reinforcing the link between food and local agriculture.

Integration of Nature

Large windows and ample glass allow natural light to fill the building, creating a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The roof terrace offers both enclosed and open areas for various activities. Users can enjoy views of the nearby Mývatn Nature Baths and Hverfjall Volcano, enhancing their experience of the landscape.

Material Utilization

The building is constructed using reinforced and prestressed concrete, along with steel, ensuring it can withstand the harsh Icelandic climate. These materials not only provide stability but also support the design's functionality. Careful planning has resulted in separate access for visitors and employees, improving the overall flow of movement in the space.

A notable feature is the integration of indoor farming capabilities, promoting sustainable practices that are relevant to the local agricultural community. This aspect underscores the intent to foster interaction among visitors while being mindful of the environment. The careful blend of space and function makes EIVIÐBÓK a thoughtful addition to its setting.
