Reinforced Concrete Mounds Creating Light-Infused Columbarium Spaces

Project in-detail

Five reinforced concrete mounds rise to allow natural light to filter through, creating a contemplative columbarium designed for reflection and remembrance.
5 key facts about this project
01
Five mounds vary in size and shape, enhancing visual diversity.
02
Natural light is maximized through a large rounded roof opening.
03
Reinforced concrete ensures durability and minimal maintenance.
04
Access is provided through three distinct entry points.
05
A draining natural floor integrates rainwater management with design.

The design features a columbarium set within a carefully planned landscape, aimed at fostering reflection and remembrance. The concept focuses on creating a peaceful environment that connects with its natural surroundings. Visitors are invited to engage thoughtfully with the space, allowing for personal contemplation and communal experience.

Form and Spatial Organization

Five distinct mounds are central to the design, each differing in size and arrangement. This variation creates a visual pattern akin to pearls on a necklace. The layout enables access from three separate points, improving navigation and interaction within the area. Each mound offers a unique spatial experience, encouraging exploration while promoting an intimate setting for reflection.

Light and Atmosphere

A large, rounded opening in the roof plays a key role in the design. It allows natural light to enter the space, creating a connection to the sky and accompanying warmth. This thoughtful use of light contributes to a calm atmosphere, enhancing the overall experience for those who visit. The relationship between the structure and natural light is carefully crafted, inviting contemplation and engagement.

Material Durability

The choice of materials includes reinforced concrete and stone, which are essential for providing strength and longevity. These materials are selected for their ability to withstand the elements while minimizing the need for maintenance. This focus on durability ensures that the columbarium remains a lasting feature in the landscape, adapting well over time without losing its intended function.

Connection to Nature

To manage rainwater effectively, the design incorporates a natural draining floor system. This feature enhances both functionality and the bond between architecture and the environment. Visitors can interact with the landscape and appreciate the relationship between memory, nature, and community. The design promotes a sense of peace and connection.

Light filters through the rounded opening, casting soft shadows on the gently sloping mounds, creating a calming effect that encourages quiet reflection.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
