Reinforced Concrete and Glass Spaces for Enhanced Urban Mobility

Project in-detail

Incorporating reinforced concrete and expansive glass elements, the design enhances urban mobility while promoting cycling as a key mode of transportation within a vibrant community setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Reinforced concrete provides structural stability while maximizing open interiors.
02
Large glass facades allow natural light to permeate the space, enhancing user experience.
03
Multimodal transport planning encourages integrated cycling and walking pathways.
04
Sustainable features include solar energy generation and rainwater harvesting systems.
05
Community-oriented design integrates multifunctional spaces to promote social interaction.

The project proposes a practical approach to urban living, integrating cycling as a key mode of transportation within its design. Set within various European contexts, it emphasizes accessibility, sustainability, and health benefits, aimed at addressing current urban challenges. The design is focused on creating a network of infrastructure that promotes connectivity and encourages active lifestyles.

Infrastructure and Connectivity

The project includes a thoughtfully designed road system that connects different areas while highlighting intermodal and multimodal transportation options. This design facilitates easy transitions between various forms of transport, enhancing accessibility for residents and visitors alike. The layout aims to remove barriers, making navigation within the urban area simpler for everyone.

Environmental Sustainability

Sustainability plays a critical role in this design. The project aims to significantly lower carbon emissions and air pollution while improving water and soil quality in the urban environment. By promoting eco-friendly practices, it contributes to the overall health of the community and supports long-term sustainable development.

Health and Community Impact

Enhancing public health is a central focus, with a particular emphasis on fostering cycling as an everyday activity. The design is positioned to bring various health benefits, including fewer fatalities, injuries, and lower absentee rates. By creating engaging public spaces, the design encourages active living and provides opportunities for social interaction among community members.

Innovative Features

One notable aspect of the design is its integration of renewable energy solutions and water conservation systems. The use of solar panels for energy generation reflects a commitment to sustainability. Additionally, rainwater harvesting techniques demonstrate effective use of natural resources. These elements link environmental responsibility with daily functionality, enhancing the overall urban experience.

The material choices include reinforced concrete and glass, which work together to provide stability and create bright, open spaces. This attention to materials enhances both the practicality and visual appeal of the design, ensuring it is well-suited to contemporary urban life.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
