The Ice Shard is a unique structure situated within an urban environment, crafted to symbolize the movement of tectonic plates. This building combines practical uses with a deep concept, offering spaces designed for both public interaction and administrative functions. Its overall form takes inspiration from ice formations, emphasizing a connection to the natural world while standing out as a significant presence in the city.

Design Concept

The concept behind the design reflects geological themes, focusing on the natural movement of the Earth. The shape resembles various forms of ice, highlighting its relationship with nature and evoking thoughts about stability and change. This connection invites people to engage with the idea of how landscapes transform over time.

Materiality

The exterior features stainless steel sheets that provide a reflective surface. This choice helps create a visual effect, allowing the building to interact with the sky and the environment. The reflections contribute to its unique appearance and enhance how it looks throughout different times of the day.

Spatial Organization

At the underground level, there is a car park that improves accessibility for visitors. The placement of lifts and staircases facilitates movement between various floors, making it easier for people to navigate. The viewing platform positioned above a fault line emphasizes the theme of geological shifts, giving visitors a place to appreciate the surrounding area from a new perspective.

Visitor Experience

Upon entering, visitors encounter a foyer that simulates the feeling of being in a cave. This immersive design feature includes a glass skylight and slanted walls, creating a unique atmosphere that aligns with the overall themes of the structure. Practical amenities, such as an information desk on the ground level and a café on an upper floor, make it inviting and comfortable for everyone.

The building also uses geothermal energy to highlight its commitment to sustainable practices. The glass lift cabin, which travels along a slanted wall, adds an interesting feature to the experience, emphasizing the dynamic movements that characterize the design.
