The Iceland Volcano Museum is located in the dramatic landscapes of Iceland and designed to serve as a hub for tourists and locals alike. Its primary function is to provide access to information about the various natural attractions in the vicinity. The museum organizes its layout around a central point, radiating outward to connect different functions while also encouraging visitors to engage with the scenic environment.

Design Structure

The museum consists of three distinct levels, each carefully planned to fulfill specific roles. The first level is partially buried in the earth, which allows for private office spaces that take advantage of natural light. This design choice fosters a direct interaction with the surrounding landscape, ensuring that the workspace remains connected to the outdoors.

Public Engagement

On the second level, visitors find the main entrance and an exhibition hall. This space is defined by extensive glass surfaces that offer unobstructed views of the natural scenery. The transparency of this level creates a welcoming atmosphere, allowing people to move effortlessly between the inside and outside while remaining aware of the beautiful landscape that surrounds them.

Elevated Experience

The third level features a café and conference rooms, providing elevated platforms where visitors can enjoy the view. These spaces blend public and private functions, creating an environment that supports both leisure and productivity. The elevation enhances the overall experience of observing the landscape, reinforcing the museum’s connection to its geographical setting.

Material Integration

Materials play a vital role in the overall design. The choice of glass and mirror-finish metal helps to maximize reflections and visibility, allowing the structure to merge effectively with its natural surroundings. This thoughtful selection reinforces the visual connection between the museum and the beautiful Icelandic landscape, making it easier for visitors to engage with both the exhibits and the views outside.

The Iceland Volcano Museum exemplifies how thoughtful design can enhance the relationship between built structures and the natural world. Its layout and material choices work together to create an inviting space that encourages exploration and appreciation of Iceland’s unique beauty. Visitors can find themselves drawn not only to the information presented inside but also to the stunning environment that lies just beyond the walls.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
