"The Upside Down," located near Lake Myvatn in Iceland, offers a thoughtful integration of architecture with the surrounding landscape. The project functions as a pavilion that combines gallery spaces, cafés, and observation areas. It aims to create an experience for visitors that fosters a connection to both the building and the natural environment. The design centers on a concept that respects the landscape and enhances the visitor experience.

Reflective Surfaces

The design incorporates reflective surfaces that help the building blend into its natural surroundings. This strategy allows the pavilion to become part of the landscape, creating a visual connection with the scenery. The use of mirrors is intentional, as they alter how people perceive the space, making it feel larger and more open. Light interacts with these surfaces, creating changing reflections throughout the day.

Spatial Organization

Flexible layout is key to the function of the pavilion. Movable walls provide adaptable spaces that can be arranged according to different needs, whether for events, exhibitions, or community gatherings. This design approach invites a sense of exploration, encouraging visitors to move freely and engage with the space. The entrance is carefully crafted to create an immediate sense of immersion, inviting people to step into an experience that feels distinct and engaging.

Sustainability Measures

The project emphasizes sustainability through thoughtful design choices. Rainwater collection features mimic natural processes, allowing the building to manage its own water use. An underground cistern is included to store rainwater, ensuring the building’s water needs are met responsibly. This approach supports the commitment to environmental stewardship, aligning the structure with its landscape while maintaining functionality.

Observatory Features

Lookout points within the pavilion offer expansive views of the impressive Icelandic scenery. These areas are designed to encourage reflection and interaction with the environment. Visitors can pause and take in the landscape, which adds another layer to the overall experience. The placement of these observatories guides people through the space and helps them appreciate the beauty surrounding the pavilion.

The changing light creates a captivating atmosphere, with reflections dancing across the surfaces, offering visitors a unique experience as day turns to night.
