## Project Overview

Located in the Mývatn region of Iceland, the Reflex Sel-Hotel is designed to establish a meaningful dialogue between architecture and the surrounding natural landscape. The intent is to create a space that fosters contemplation and encourages visitors to engage deeply with their environment, reflecting aspects of Icelandic culture and heritage.

## Reflection as a Design Theme

The architectural design centers around the concept of reflection, which informs both the physical layout and the psychological experience of the visitors. A distinctive feature is the implementation of an artificial meteor crater, which provides a visual and experiential focal point. This space not only serves as an observation area with panoramic views of Mývatn Lake but also enhances the immersive experience of the guests. The layout incorporates zones aimed at facilitating both introspection and social interaction, reinforcing the design's commitment to fostering self-awareness and community engagement.

### Architectural Form and Materiality

The hotel’s architectural form is characterized by a contrasting roofline inspired by the region's rugged terrain, merging sharp lines with softer curves. This design approach mirrors the collision of built forms and their natural surroundings. Material choices emphasize a strong connection to Icelandic identity; dark, textured stone veneers reference the local volcanic rock, while wood accents enrich indoor spaces with warmth. The strategic use of one-way mirrors blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments, inviting nature into the visitor experience. Skylights maximize natural light and improve sightlines, contributing to the overall ambiance, while concrete elements ground the structure within its context.

### Functional Zone Organization

The Reflex Sel-Hotel’s design incorporates a variety of interconnected functional zones that guide the visitor's journey.

- The **entrance walkway**, enhanced by native vegetation and reflective surfaces, invites visitors to engage with their surroundings from the outset.
- A dedicated **self-awareness area**, featuring spa facilities, promotes relaxation and introspection through the integration of natural elements.
- The **social zone**, comprising a cafe and brewery, serves as a communal gathering space designed to foster conversation and connections among guests. A balcony overlooking the crater provides a platform for observing the activity below, further bridging individual and communal experiences.

Overall, the Reflex Sel-Hotel employs an integrative approach, where each design choice serves a dual purpose, emphasizing not only practicality but also an existential exploration that encourages self-discovery through engagement with Iceland's natural beauty.
