Reflective Stainless Steel Hemispheres Capturing Nature's Panoramas in the Biosphere Reserve

Project in-detail

Five reflective hemispherical platforms rise above the terrain, using polished stainless steel to capture and project the surrounding landscape, while serving as an observation space within the Latvia biosphere reserve.
5 key facts about this project
01
Five hemispherical platforms create a unique floating effect above the landscape.
02
Stainless steel cladding enhances the reflective quality to merge with the environment.
03
A hydraulic lift system allows access to all viewing levels without traditional stairs.
04
Circular openings enable seamless movement of the lift between platforms.
05
The structure's design promotes sensory engagement with the surrounding biosphere.

The Pano is located in the Latvia biosphere reserve, a region celebrated for its natural beauty and ecological importance. Designed to offer visitors panoramic views of the landscape, the structure integrates with its surroundings while providing an immersive experience. The concept focuses on transforming the traditional idea of a panorama into a spatial and architectural form, resulting in a unique interaction with nature.

Architectural Concept

At the core of The Pano is the idea of creating three-dimensional experiences based on panorama. The structure features a cylinder shape with five upside-down hemispherical platforms placed at varying heights. These platforms gradually flatten in curvature, giving the appearance of floating above the ground. This design approach encourages visitors to look outward, focusing not on the building itself but on the expansive landscape that surrounds it.

Materiality

Stainless steel is used to clad the hemispheres, selected for its strength and ability to withstand different weather conditions. The polished surface of the steel functions as a mirror, reflecting the environment. This reflection creates a visual dialogue between the structure and the natural world, allowing visitors to engage dynamically with their surroundings. The choice of material reinforces the building's purpose of blending into the biosphere reserve.

Functional Elements

A hydraulic lifting system is integral to The Pano's design. This feature eliminates the need for stairs, allowing for smooth vertical movement within the structure. The lift provides access to all levels, making the platforms reachable for everyone, including those with disabilities. Circular openings in the floors allow the lift to move between levels, contributing to a sense of openness and continuity.

Unique Design Characteristics

The arrangement of the hemispherical platforms acts as a type of convex mirror ceiling, creating different perspectives based on a visitor's location. This design feature enriches the panoramic experience, offering distinctive views from various heights. The top level includes an enclosed viewing area with transparent walls and a surrounding balcony. This space connects visitors to the forest outside, reinforcing the relationship between the structure and the landscape, and enhancing the overall experience of being in nature.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
