Reflective Light and Hope Through Rainbow Windows in a Ground-Level Hospice

Project in-detail

Rainbow windows create vibrant reflections of light in a ground-level hospice designed for accessibility and emotional healing, fostering a serene environment for individuals facing end-of-life care.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rainbow windows capture morning sunlight to create colorful reflections indoors.
02
Ground-level design enhances accessibility for guests with mobility challenges.
03
Accessible pathways connect the structure to the natural surroundings.
04
Interior spaces prioritize natural light to promote emotional well-being.
05
The layout encourages interaction and community among residents and staff.

The hospice project located at Main Beach, Gold Coast, QLD, is designed to support individuals during the end of their lives. Situated between MacArthur Parade and Main Beach Parade, the building emphasizes accessibility while encouraging connections to the surrounding natural landscape. The design centers on creating calming spaces that allow for reflection and comfort through the use of natural light.

Architectural Concept

The design focuses on bringing sunlight into the interior spaces to uplift the mood of residents. Large windows are strategically placed to capture light throughout the day. This warm illumination brightens the interiors and creates interesting reflections that enhance the overall experience. The idea of incorporating rainbow features symbolizes hope and adds to the soothing environment.

Accessibility Features

Accessibility is a key consideration in the design, ensuring that all guests can move freely. The hospice is built at ground level, making navigation easy, especially for those with mobility challenges. Wheelchair-accessible paths surround the building, allowing guests to safely interact with the outdoors. These pathways invite occupants to experience the natural beauty around them, promoting well-being and peace.

Interaction with Nature

The hospice encourages a strong relationship between the building and its natural surroundings. Outdoor pathways are designed to help visitors explore the landscape, helping them feel more connected to the environment. This balance between indoors and outdoors is intended to foster comfort, creating a peaceful place for individuals who require care.

A Highlight of Design

One distinct feature is the rainbow windows, which are made to capture sunlight effectively during the morning. As light passes through these windows, it creates colorful patterns within the space. This playful use of light not only brightens the rooms but also encourages a positive atmosphere, adding to the hospice's overall mission of providing care and support in a welcoming setting.
