Reflective Glass and Local Stone Embrace Hverfjall's Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Reflective glass and local stone seamlessly integrate with Hverfjall's volcanic landscape, creating an immersive visitor center that deepens the connection to Iceland's geological history.
5 key facts about this project
01
Reflective glass facades mirror the surrounding volcanic landscape, enhancing visual integration.
02
A circular crater serves as the entrance ramp, echoing the geological features of Hverfjall.
03
Dark exhibition areas create a contrasting environment that encourages exploration and reflection.
04
Sustainability is prioritized through the use of geothermal energy and rainwater management systems.
05
Local stone and timber materials ground the design within the natural context of the site.

The design is located within the Krafla volcanic system in Iceland, focusing on the Hverfjall volcano, which has a rich geological history. The aim is to provide visitors with an engaging experience that connects them to the natural features of the site. The concept features a circular crater that functions as an entrance ramp, replicating the effects of volcanic eruptions and inviting exploration of the rugged landscape.

Entrance and Ramp

The entrance ramp is a key feature that leads visitors into the structure. By cutting into the earth, it creates a physical connection to the surrounding terrain. This ramp is inviting yet intriguing, prompting visitors to start their journey into the heart of the building. It sets the tone for the experience ahead, allowing the natural topography to play an important role in the design.

Interior Spaces

Inside, the design transitions to darker exhibition spaces that encourage curiosity and discovery. These areas are softly illuminated with minimal lighting from strategic glass placements, creating a gentle glow. The atmosphere here encourages reflection and immersion in the volcanic narrative of the region, allowing visitors to connect more deeply with the geological story being told.

Coffee Shop Area

A light-filled corridor guides visitors to the coffee shop, contrasting starkly with the darker exhibition spaces. This area features large glass façades that showcase stunning views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. The influx of natural light creates a warm and inviting environment, symbolizing a return to brightness after the exploratory experience within the darker spaces.

Materiality and Sustainability

Material choices highlight the building’s connection to the geological context. Reflective glass is used to mirror the landscape, making the structure blend into its surroundings. Additionally, stone materials keep the design rooted in the local topography and the history of the area. Sustainability is also a strong focus, with geothermal energy and green roofs incorporated to ensure the building operates harmoniously with Iceland’s natural environment.

The design effectively connects interior and exterior spaces. It emphasizes the geological history while providing a rich and immersive experience for all who visit.
