Reflective Facade and Perforated Metal Pathways Enhancing Geological Exploration

Project in-detail

An observation tower with a reflective facade and modular perforated metal pathways provides an immersive experience that fosters exploration of the geological features at the intersection of two tectonic plates, serving as a valuable educational hub for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
Observation tower design allows panoramic views of the intersecting tectonic plates.
02
Modular pathways utilize perforated metal to prevent snow accumulation.
03
Geothermal heating loops provide a sustainable energy source throughout the structure.
04
Reflective facade enhances integration with the surrounding landscape.
05
Curated exhibit spaces educate visitors on local geology and geothermal features.

The project "Treasure Seeker" is located in a geologically significant area where the European and North American tectonic plates meet. It invites visitors to engage with the environment and the story of cave exploration. The design reflects themes of discovery and connection to nature, serving both as a viewing platform and an educational space. The structure aims to blend with the natural setting, enhancing the experience of those who come to explore.

Observation Tower

At the center of "Treasure Seeker" is an observation tower that rises above the rugged landscape. This tall structure offers wide views of the surrounding geological features. It functions as both a gathering point and an information hub, allowing visitors to learn more about the area. Spaces within the tower include visitor information sections and a café, encouraging social interaction and enhancing the overall visit.

Pathway System

The design includes a carefully planned pathway system that guides visitors through the landscape. These paths are designed to be modular, using perforated metal panels to reduce snow buildup. By elevating the pathways, the design protects the fragile ecosystem below from erosion. This aspect shows a commitment to environmental care while allowing for a deeper exploration of the area.

Geothermal Integration

A notable element in the design is the use of geothermal heating loops embedded in the building. These systems provide warmth, making the interior spaces comfortable for guests. They also educate visitors about renewable energy sources, highlighting how local resources can be used sustainably. This integration reinforces the connection between the architecture and the surrounding environment.

Light and Reflection

Light plays an important role in the overall experience. Skylights are strategically placed to let in natural light, creating a blend of bright and shadowy areas throughout the day. The tower's reflective facade helps it merge with the landscape, capturing different perspectives as visitors move around. The design fosters a sense of exploration, with views framed by glass projections that link the interior to the natural world.

At the top of the tower, the viewing platform features a skylight that guides visitors upward while acting as a beacon at night. This detail not only highlights the journey to the top but also reinforces the themes of exploration and discovery that define the entire project.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
