Local basalt and wood emphasize the connection to the landscape.

The coffee house located near Mývatn in Iceland reflects the charm of traditional Icelandic cottages. It operates as a visitor center for hikers, designed to harmonize with the natural landscape. The building prioritizes functionality while offering an engaging experience, allowing visitors to connect with the stunning topography of the region.

Design Integration

The structure features a sloped roof and low openings that create a visual connection with the surrounding landscape. These design choices resonate with the natural contours of the area, promoting a sense of unity with the environment. The goal is not only aesthetic but also functional, enhancing the overall experience of those who approach the building.

Pathway Experience

A footpath links the coffee house to the hiking trails. It begins at ground level and gradually rises to the roof. This pathway follows the circular shape of the building, inviting visitors to explore as they move through the landscape. At the top, a walkway offers views of the area, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the Icelandic scenery, enriching their outdoor journey.

Materiality and Texture

The outer façade features reflective metal cladding that changes appearance with the shifting light throughout the seasons. This choice of material encourages interaction between the building and its surroundings. Local materials like basalt and wood are also used, providing a contrast that grounds the coffee house within its landscape and enhances its character.

Spatial Dynamics

The interior layout fosters a welcoming atmosphere for small gatherings. A central platform surrounded by sloping surfaces creates a comfortable space to enjoy the Nordic light. Carefully placed windows and openings control the flow of natural light, framing specific views of the landscape and enhancing the spatial experience.

Attention to these design details leads to a structure that captures the interplay of light and shadow, reflecting the natural beauty of its surroundings while serving the needs of its visitors.
