5 key facts about this project
The Grjótagjá Cave Observation Tower and Visitor Center is located in the heart of Iceland, where the earth's tectonic plates create a dramatic landscape. This structure serves as both a visitor center and an observation point, inviting people to explore the unique geological features of the area. The design reflects the region’s natural processes, featuring two large prismatic forms that symbolize the movement of tectonic plates, separated by a calm body of water that mirrors the nearby Grjótagjá cave.
Design Concept
The building has a sizable footprint and rises to nine stories, making it a prominent feature in the scenery. Visitors arrive via a path lined with rough lava rock, enhancing their connection to the surrounding environment. The façade draws inspiration from the shapes of volcanoes, showcasing layers of solidified lava and volcanic ash. This visual representation emphasizes the geological history of the area and engages viewers with the site’s unique characteristics.
Interior Layout
Inside, the layout encourages exploration and interaction, starting at a warm vestibule that leads into the visitor center. A thoughtfully designed circulation system guides visitors through the building. "Stair - Orange" leads upwards to an observation platform with sweeping views of Mývatn lake and Hverfjall volcano caldera. In contrast, "Stair - Green" invites visitors to descend while taking in views of Hverfjall. An elevator makes the building accessible for everyone.
Environmental Integration
Natural light fills the building, thanks to a double-glazed curtain wall that surrounds a Cross Laminated Timber frame. This combination creates a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The structure utilizes a geothermal heating system that includes underfloor hot water, reflecting a commitment to energy efficiency. Sustainability practices are evident as well, with kitchen organic waste composted, human waste processed for ecological benefit, and systems in place to collect rainwater for drinking.
Exterior Details
The polished lava stone reflection pool in front of the building adds to its visual interest, reflecting the structure as it captures daylight. This water feature emphasizes the theme of natural processes, serving both aesthetic and practical purposes. The contrast between the building's forms and the rugged landscape helps create an experience that encourages visitors to engage with the natural world, making it a significant destination in the region.
