Reflecting Steel and Green Marble Structure Embracing Vineyard Experiences

Project in-detail

A structure of reflecting steel and green marble rises to protect the vineyards beneath a dynamic Net, creating an immersive environment for wine tasting that celebrates the agrarian landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Reflecting steel poles visually connect the structure to traditional vineyard practices.
02
The transparent ceiling maximizes natural light and views of the landscape.
03
A protective Net shields the vineyard while creating an immersive outdoor experience.
04
Green marble accents enhance the interior’s aesthetic appeal.
05
Vines and trees are integrated into the design, reinforcing the connection to nature.

The Monte D'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is located within Quinta do Monte d'Oiro and integrates the surrounding vineyard landscape into its design. It focuses on the experience of tasting wine, inviting visitors to connect with both nature and the traditions of viticulture. The design centers around three key elements: the Pole, the Glass House, and the Net, each contributing to a cohesive and thoughtful environment.

Pole

The Pole stands as a defining architectural element, inspired by traditional practices in vineyards. It provides structural support and helps to outline the tasting room, creating a space that feels separate yet connected to the vineyard outside. Symbolically, the Pole represents the essence of winemaking, reinforcing the importance of the site’s agricultural heritage.

Glass House

The Glass House forms the heart of the design, showcasing the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Its large openings create an inviting atmosphere, allowing for natural light and views of the vineyards. This connection to the outside is vital for the wine tasting experience, as it helps visitors appreciate the relationship between the wine and the land from which it comes.

Net

The Net serves as a protective layer for the vineyards, shielding them from harsh weather conditions like hail and wind. This feature blurs the boundaries between the interior space and nature. It plays with light and shadow, creating a calming environment that invites relaxation. The Net enhances the experience by integrating the movement of natural elements into the architectural space.

Materials used in the project include reflecting steel for the poles, cement for the pavement, and green marble for select decorative aspects. These materials are thoughtfully chosen to complement the overall design and support its functionality.

Surrounding the building, vines and trees reinforce the connection between architecture and agriculture, illustrating the harmonious relationship between built and natural environments. This design not only serves its purpose but also deepens appreciation for the region's wine culture and landscape.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
