Reedbed-Integrated Retreat Using CLT and Masonry in a Natural Landscape

Project in-detail

Integrating a reedbed water filtration system with cross-laminated timber and masonry, the design creates a sustainable retreat that harmonizes with its natural surroundings while providing a tranquil space for meditation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Integrates a reedbed water filtration system for sustainability.
02
Utilizes pre-cut cross-laminated timber panels for efficient assembly.
03
Features masonry chimneys that serve dual purposes for cooling and heating.
04
Incorporates wind catchers to enhance natural ventilation.
05
Clad in locally sourced cork to minimize environmental impact.

The VALE DE MOSES Meditation Cabins, known as CASA ELEMENTARIA, are located in Valle des Moses. The design emphasizes sustainability and a simple approach to construction. The cabins serve as a retreat where visitors can feel connected to the natural surroundings. With a focus on low energy consumption and accessibility, the concept is well-suited for its mountainous environment.

Structural Integrity and Assembly

The building uses cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels that come pre-cut for easy assembly. These panels create a sturdy framework and make on-site construction straightforward. Two chimneys, made of masonry and CLT, anchor the building to concrete pad foundations. This structure adapts well to the terrain while keeping a minimal footprint that blends into the landscape.

Passive Cooling Techniques

The design employs passive cooling methods that draw on traditional practices. Wind catchers help to enhance airflow through the building, using stack and cross ventilation. This approach reduces the need for mechanical cooling systems and promotes a pleasant indoor climate. Such strategies align with the overall goals of energy efficiency and environmental care.

Water Management and Filtration

A key aspect of CASA ELEMENTARIA is the reedbed water filtration system. This system captures rainwater and grey water for reuse, reinforcing the importance of resource management. The chimneys not only provide thermal mass for winter heating but also act as wind catchers in the warmer months. This multifunctionality highlights the design's adaptability to seasonal changes.

Material Selection and Environmental Impact

Choosing materials thoughtfully reflects a commitment to local sourcing and sustainability. The use of masonry and cork for exterior walls contributes to thermal regulation while keeping the building's environmental impact low. These materials are efficient and resonate with the local character, strengthening the connection to the region.

The design allows light to play across spaces, as louvres on the chimneys open to improve ventilation and frame views of the natural surroundings. This detail invites occupants to engage with nature, creating a calm environment that fosters a sense of peace and mindfulness.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
