Located in a vineyard setting, the design focuses on enhancing the sensory experience related to wine tasting. It aims to create a connection between the architecture and its natural surroundings. The design concept revolves around a journey, guiding visitors through a series of sensory interactions that deepen their appreciation for wine and its environment.

Conceptual Framework

The arrangement features three distinct masses, each aligned with specific axes: the winery axis, access road axis, and square axis. This layout respects the site's topography and allows for ease of movement while creating varied spatial experiences. The careful consideration of elevation changes adds to the overall interaction among visitors as they navigate the space.

Spatial Flow

Visitors begin their experience as they enter through a tunnel-like entrance designed to draw the eye toward the winery landscape. This progression continues with a minimal garden, accessed through an arched gateway. Here, users can pause to take in their surroundings, an opportunity that encourages reflection before they enter the main tasting area. This sequence of spaces isolates the senses, allowing visitors to appreciate the environment in a more profound way.

Engagement with Nature

In the tasting area, the design opens up to merge light, color, and fragrance, inviting visitors to explore the space fully. Visual connections are thoughtfully placed to spark curiosity and offer a sense of discovery as guests move through the different zones. This openness fosters a strong relationship between the wine, the building, and the surrounding landscape.

Materiality and Design Detail

Red bricks are utilized in the construction, echoing the existing red roof of the winery. This choice of material helps establish a cohesive aesthetic while ensuring durability against the elements. A long table, inspired by the green arch-gate of the winery, acts as a focal point in the tasting room. It brings together both functionality and design, effectively tying the various elements of the project into a unified experience.

The thoughtful arrangement of spaces and materials creates a welcoming environment for visitors, allowing them to engage fully with both the wine and the cultural context surrounding it. Each design detail contributes to an enriching experience that resonates with the essence of wine making and enjoyment.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
