VERA Tower is located in Vogar, Iceland, and is designed to connect with the distinctive landscape of the region. The project reflects the concept of "vera," which means presence in Icelandic, highlighting its role as a prominent space for both locals and tourists. The design takes inspiration from the angled rock formations seen in the Grjótagjá Caves, incorporating a V-shaped architecture that aligns with the natural forms around it.

Architectural Form

The tower features bold angles and a strong vertical presence, creating a noticeable silhouette against the landscape. It draws attention and invites exploration. As visitors enter, they experience a journey that gradually reveals internal and external views, enhancing their engagement with the space. The careful arrangement of angles and lines not only serves aesthetic purposes but also creates moments of surprise and delight throughout the building.

Spatial Organization

Inside, VERA Tower is organized to facilitate ease of movement and interaction. Key areas include a lobby, information center, retail space, café, offices, changing rooms, and storage. This thoughtful layout divides spaces into public and semi-public sections, accommodating the varied needs of visitors. The design encourages exploration, allowing people to navigate the building freely while also enjoying the different functions it offers.

Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability plays a significant role in the design of VERA Tower. The structure uses locally sourced recycled materials, which helps reduce environmental impact. Natural stone cladding adds thermal efficiency, while the angled shape promotes sunlight capture. The building uses geothermal energy for heating, demonstrating a responsible approach to resource use. Rainwater collection systems are also in place, supporting water conservation efforts and highlighting the focus on sustainable practices.

Experiential Design

Visitors to VERA Tower find a memorable experience, particularly at the observation platform, which offers expansive views of Iceland's dramatic scenery. The careful placement of windows and openings frames these views, creating moments of connection with nature. Each design detail has been considered to enhance this experience, inviting contemplation and appreciation for the surrounding environment. The structure stands as a reminder of the landscape's beauty and the relationship between the built environment and its natural context.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
