The Exchange Machine is situated at the site of the Beirut Explosion, which occurred on August 4, 2020. This location was heavily impacted by the detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, leaving a mark on the community. The design focuses on education and community connection, aiming to turn a place of tragedy into one of hope and resilience. The overall concept embraces knowledge exchange and social gathering, fostering healing through shared experiences.

Design Concept

At the heart of The Exchange Machine is a multi-functional educational space. The design features a large courtyard that serves as a gathering area for people. This central space encourages interaction and conversation among visitors. Surrounding the courtyard, there are various facilities, including workshops and conference rooms. These areas are dedicated to important topics such as innovation and public discourse, linking the architecture to the evolving needs of the community.

Functional Elements

One noteworthy aspect of the design is the restaurant court, featuring several themed cafés that showcase different sports. This addition enhances the overall social experience, creating a lively atmosphere. The design supports active engagement, inviting visitors to take part in community life and build connections with one another.

Material Selection

Recycled shipping containers are a key feature in the design. These containers have been creatively repurposed to create adaptable and multifunctional spaces. This choice reflects a commitment to sustainability and adds a narrative of resilience to the project. The use of containers allows for flexibility, providing environments suitable for various community activities.

Atmospheric Qualities

To enhance the experience of the space, a waterfall feature has been incorporated, bringing a sense of calm to the busy environment. The inclusion of greenery and ample natural light creates a welcoming atmosphere, promoting a connection to nature. Together, these elements contribute to an overall setting that is not only functional but also enriching for its users. This design provides a place for reflection and community building, addressing the needs of those who visit.
