The Pensieve is located in Latvia, a country known for its rich timber industry. The design of the Pensieve combines contemporary elements with local traditions, creating a space meant for reflection and remembrance. The overall concept emphasizes balance and symmetry, allowing the structure to connect harmoniously with its natural surroundings, enhancing the experience for visitors.

Architecture Concept

The Pensieve features a clean and monumental design, highlighted by the symmetrical arrangement of handrails and the columbarium itself. This symmetry contributes to a peaceful atmosphere, which is essential for contemplation. Additionally, the design creates a contrast between stillness and movement through the gently rising walls and internal ramp. This feature guides visitors along their path, encouraging a sense of reflection.

Materiality

Local timber is a key material in the Pensieve, showcasing a dedication to sustainable design practices. The use of remaining lumber from nearby timber factories supports local craftspeople while paying homage to the area's historical significance. The project employs various thicknesses of timber, specifically 25 mm, 50 mm, 100 mm, and 150 mm, which enhance not only the structure's stability but also its connection to the local context.

Functional Considerations

The design incorporates several thoughtful details that enhance functionality. Each columbarium unit features an added height of 30 mm to prevent falling vases and resin candle runoff. This practical consideration ensures that the space remains functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. The inclusion of recycled metal panels also simplifies maintenance, particularly when it comes to cleaning wax residue from candles.

The relationship with the surrounding landscape is an important aspect of the design. It creates a physical connection that enhances the overall visitor experience. Visitors can engage with both the architectural elements and the natural beauty that surrounds the Pensieve. This careful arrangement fosters an atmosphere of reflection, making the space a meaningful site for remembrance.
