The "Bathing Elf" project is located in the geothermal area of Iceland, designed to enhance the experience of visitors at the Grjotagja thermal pools. Drawing from Icelandic folklore, the design portrays a bathing elf, blending the story of this mythical being with the natural landscape. The concept focuses on creating a space that is both functional and connected to its cultural roots, allowing guests to engage with the environment meaningfully.

Conceptual Framework

The design features a cave tower shaped like a bathing elf, with its head and nose visibly rising above the thermal waters. This visual representation combines the notion of the mythical creature with practical uses within the building. The elf’s nose serves as a storage room, balancing the needs of visitors with the thematic essence of the structure. Meanwhile, the elf’s hat will function as an observation platform, café, and office workstation, providing various options for users while enhancing their experience.

Architectural Features

Key elements include a prominent observation platform that offers expansive views of the thermal landscape. This feature encourages interaction with the building and its surroundings, making the natural environment part of the visitor’s experience. Plans also include two functional additions labeled “The Toilet” and “The Kvennagja Shower Room,” aimed at further accommodating the practical needs of users within the space.

Material Considerations

For the exterior covering of the tower hat, the design uses recycled local fabrics, which reflect a commitment to sustainability. This choice connects to Iceland’s textile traditions while minimizing environmental impact. The pillars of the structure draw inspiration from the traditional Icelandic instrument, the lur. When the wind moves through these pillars, they produce sound, adding an auditory layer to the visitor's experience that harmonizes with the natural setting.

Design Detailing

The blend of storytelling and architecture is evident in how the bathing elf is represented. This imaginative approach, combined with the use of locally sourced materials, demonstrates a thoughtful and practical design. The project addresses user demands while simultaneously enriching the connection between the space and Icelandic culture. The combination of functionality and narrative creates a unique environment that invites exploration and reflection.
