Recycled Euro Pallet Home with Integrated Solar Panels and Green Spaces

Project in-detail

Utilizing recycled Euro pallets and integrated solar panels, the design incorporates green spaces to create an eco-friendly dwelling that promotes biodiversity while serving as a modern guest house.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes recycled Euro pallets as the primary structural material.
02
Features integrated solar panels for energy generation.
03
Incorporates rainwater harvesting systems for water management.
04
Designed with bird nests and feeding stations to enhance biodiversity.
05
Prioritizes cross ventilation for natural climate control throughout the seasons.

Nature's Guest House is an architectural effort that focuses on sustainable living while blending with its urban surroundings. It addresses concerns related to population growth and increasing housing costs. The design aims to create a living space that is in harmony with nature, promoting an idea of coexistence between people and the environment.

SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES

The design employs various sustainable technologies to reduce its environmental footprint. Solar panels are positioned to capture sunlight effectively, allowing for the generation of electricity that supports the home's energy needs. High-performance thermal windows and doors play a crucial role by minimizing heat loss and improving the entry of natural light. Overall, these features help lower energy consumption and encourage the use of passive solar heating, aligning with modern environmental standards.

VENTILATION STRATEGIES

Careful attention has been given to ventilation strategies in the design. During warmer months, cross ventilation is emphasized, using natural airflow to keep indoor temperatures comfortable. In contrast, the winter approach focuses on heat recycling, ensuring warmth while controlling the amount of fresh air that enters. This balanced ventilation system aims to enhance energy efficiency and maintain comfort throughout different seasons.

STRUCTURAL INNOVATIONS

Recycled Euro pallets are used in the project's structural framework. This choice reflects an innovative approach to construction by providing a sustainable and cost-effective material option. Euro pallets are both readily available and recyclable, making them an environmentally friendly choice. This approach supports the overall goal of incorporating resource-efficient practices within the design.

ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRATION

Nature's Guest House actively engages with the local environment to support biodiversity. The design incorporates features like bird nests and feeding stations, creating spaces that invite wildlife. This thoughtful integration highlights the commitment to architecture that is compassionate toward both inhabitants and nature. These details foster a connection between residents and the surrounding ecosystem, enhancing the overall living experience.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
