"Affordable Aggregation" is situated in Melbourne and aims to tackle the need for affordable housing in the city. It features a design that supports a diverse range of living options. By utilizing a modular approach, the development ensures that each housing unit can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of its occupants. This project fosters community engagement while providing essential living spaces.

Modularity

The project relies on prefabricated units, which allows for efficient construction and versatile designs. These units can be combined in various ways to create homes of different sizes, from small studios to larger family accommodations. Ranging from 30 to 180 square meters, the different housing options cater to individuals, couples, and families. This flexibility enables a mixed-use neighborhood where residents can find homes that suit their lifestyles.

Customization

An important feature of this development is the focus on customization. Residents are encouraged to play an active role in shaping their living environments, which enhances the sense of ownership. This design approach acknowledges the varied preferences of individuals and families, fostering a stronger connection between people and their homes. As occupants influence the design of their spaces, the community grows closer, resulting in a supportive and interactive atmosphere.

Sustainability

Sustainability is woven throughout the project, emphasizing the need for efficient energy use and resource management. The design incorporates recyclable materials and takes advantage of leftover supplies from construction activities. By prioritizing such practices, the development aims to minimize environmental impact, ensuring that it remains sensitive to ecological concerns while providing quality housing.

Community Integration

Careful planning of living spaces enhances social interaction among residents. The arrangement of housing units and common areas fosters engagement and connection, creating a vibrant community environment. This attention to community aspects helps in addressing urban challenges in Melbourne, showcasing how thoughtful design can contribute to a more inclusive society.

Stringent attention to detail is evident in design elements like strategically placed voids to improve airflow. These features not only contribute to energy efficiency but also enhance comfort for residents. This integration of practical and aesthetic considerations results in a functional living experience that meets the everyday needs of its occupants.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
