Auga: The Eye of Hverfjall is located in the rich and diverse landscapes of Iceland, specifically designed to connect visitors with the nearby Hverfjall volcano. The site functions as a café and a gift shop, providing travelers with a space to enjoy refreshments while taking in the natural beauty around them. The design intends to create a meaningful interaction with the environment by thoughtfully incorporating elements that enhance the visitor experience.

Lookout Functionality

A central feature of the design is the lookout, which stands atop the coffee shop. This space offers an observation point for visitors to engage with the striking views of the volcano. With several rectangular openings, the lookout frames the scenery, allowing guests to enjoy both daylight vistas and nighttime displays of the Aurora Borealis. This aspect encourages a deeper appreciation for the surrounding area.

Visitor Circulation

The layout of the Iris Café uses a semi-concentric plan to improve visitor movement and flow. A patio is included to guide people around the building, creating natural pathways. The entrance features three distinct paths to direct visitors efficiently and enhance access. A central corridor connects public spaces with the private office areas, striking a balance between openness and privacy while ensuring easy navigation within the facility.

Public and Private Spaces

The design clearly distinguishes between public and private areas within the building complex. The café and gift shop on the right side offer a spacious environment for visitors to relax and interact. A central ramp separates the visitor services from the office spaces, providing necessary privacy for staff while maintaining an inviting atmosphere for guests.

Material and Environmental Integration

Materials chosen for the project align with its surroundings, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and contextual harmony. The semi-circular shape of the building allows for expansive views and encourages a connection to the landscape. Inside, the café and gift shop open to a courtyard that provides wide views of rolling hills, contrasted with the dramatic sight of Hverfjall. This arrangement enriches the overall experience for visitors, allowing them to connect meaningfully with the Icelandic landscape.

The design emphasizes a blend of open spaces and thoughtful details, inviting visitors to experience the unique beauty of the environment in a straightforward and engaging manner.
