### Overview
The Northern Lights Retreat is situated in Iceland, an area recognized for its striking natural landscapes, particularly the aurora borealis. This design proposal aims to provide guests with an immersive environment conducive to relaxation and rejuvenation, emphasizing privacy and self-sufficiency. Facilities are arranged to facilitate a comprehensive experience, allowing guests to engage with the setting while minimizing direct staff interaction.

### Architectural Strategy
The architectural framework features a modern, angular design, selected for its energy efficiency. A tiered layout enhances both functionality and dynamic views, creating a distinctive spatial experience. Key components include individually designed guest homes for various group sizes, a communal guest hub that fosters social interaction, a host facility to ensure operational effectiveness, and common amenities such as saunas and a horse barn that contribute to the retreat's rustic character.

### Material Selection
Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of the design, with a focus on local materials. The use of reclaimed wood for the guest homes’ exteriors promotes harmony with the surroundings, while stone in the guest hub contributes to thermal regulation. A steel framework ensures structural resilience in Iceland’s challenging climate. Extensive glazing in the form of windows and skylights maximizes natural light, offering unobstructed views of the aurora borealis. Additionally, various insulation materials have been incorporated to enhance energy efficiency and ensure guest comfort.

### Sustainability Features
The retreat actively integrates renewable energy sources, including vertical axis wind turbines and solar panels to support daily operations. A rainwater collection system is also part of the design, promoting responsible water management practices. The mobility of the guest homes allows for potential relocation, minimizing ecological impact and preserving the natural landscape. This design not only strives for luxury but also embodies a commitment to sustainability, ensuring a respectful coexistence with the environment.
