Home Sweet Home is an initiative designed to tackle the housing crisis in San Francisco, a city grappling with high living costs and growing social inequality. The focus is on transforming underused areas beneath interstate highways 80 and 280 into permanent homes. This approach aims to integrate marginalized populations back into the urban landscape while creating sustainable living spaces. The project envisions a community-oriented environment that not only provides housing but also fosters social connection.

Living Spheres

The design incorporates several living spheres that represent different aspects of home life. The first sphere, "Being," focuses on individual needs by offering flexible spaces that residents can adapt to their preferences. Following this, the "Caring" sphere addresses family dynamics, fostering support and collaboration within households. The "Sharing" sphere promotes collective living, encouraging resource sharing among residents to enhance community ties. The last two spheres, "Coliving" and "Coexisting," encourage broader community engagement and help integrate the new development with its surrounding neighborhoods.

Sustainability and Materials

A significant element of Home Sweet Home is its dedication to sustainability through the use of recycled materials. By taking advantage of construction waste from the Bay Area, the project emphasizes a circular economy. Infrastructural walls are constructed as service spaces, housing essential domestic needs while utilizing recycled materials from old skyscrapers. This careful selection challenges the norm of waste in construction and offers an environmentally responsible solution.

Community Engagement

Active community engagement is central to the design. Programmatic platforms create shared living areas that facilitate interaction among residents, enhancing the communal experience. Plug-in rooms serve as individual living spaces that can be customized, giving residents the opportunity to establish their identity within the community. This focus on adaptability allows for a diverse range of needs and encourages meaningful involvement in shaping living environments.

The arrangement of public and private spaces within Home Sweet Home invites residents to engage with their surroundings. This active participation in community life builds a sense of belonging, reinforcing the value of social connections in urban settings. Each aspect of the design works harmoniously to create a welcoming atmosphere, helping to address the complexities of urban living in San Francisco.
