5 key facts about this project
The Visitor Center - Gestamiðstöð is a land-art installation that highlights the relationship between architecture and its surrounding landscape, specifically the volcano to the southeast and the lakes to the north. This center serves as a space for visitors who are preparing for hikes, featuring exhibition areas and a café that encourages both learning and reflection. The design focuses on creating varied experiences through spatial relationships that connect visitors with the natural features of the site.
Spatial Organization
The design carefully guides visitors on their journey to the volcano. Dark polished stone walls and an external underground exhibition gallery create a unique atmosphere. At the end of this path, a dramatic cut through the rock offers a view of the volcano's height. This design choice not only engages visitors with the environment but also heightens their awareness of the geological context surrounding them.
Materiality and Aesthetics
Materials used in the center include concrete gabions, timber, triple-glazed façade panels, and Corten steel. Each material serves a purpose, showing that the design responds thoughtfully to the site. The combination of solid and transparent sections creates visual interest and allows natural light to illuminate the interior. The large windows frame views of the lakes and landscape, connecting the inside with the outside.
Sustainability and Community Engagement
Sustainability is a core aspect of the design. The project uses materials sourced from the site or made to specific transportation standards, allowing for easy assembly on location. This approach supports a philosophy of leaving minimal impact on the environment. The building’s layout aligns with existing paths, promoting accessibility and ensuring that visitors can easily navigate the area.
Inside, the visitor center offers a warm atmosphere with timber finishes that contrast the rugged exterior. Large windows in the café allow for expansive views of the surrounding lake landscape. This connection to nature fosters a sense of calm and invites visitors to appreciate the unique environment. The design intent is clear: to create a welcoming place that informs and engages visitors as they explore the wonders of the landscape.
