La Nostra Terra - The Splits addresses the impacts of climate change on soil and habitats. The setting for this project is a community facing the challenges of dry land where previous buildings have lost their function. The design seeks to rejuvenate this area into a lively space that supports both people and the environment. At the core of the concept are the transformations of deteriorating landscapes into places of growth and interaction.

Design Concept

The design visualizes the cracks found in dry soil as architectural forms that rise in different heights. This abstraction reflects both the natural terrain and the spirit of recovery from adverse conditions. The buildings suggest a narrative of renewal, offering a space where life can flourish despite environmental challenges.

Integration of Nature

The project emphasizes the importance of connecting built environments with nature. Areas for trees and plants are included throughout the design to create a balance between human activities and the natural world. This integration improves the aesthetics of the area and supports local biodiversity, encouraging a healthy ecosystem that benefits all residents.

Sustainability and Material Reuse

A key aspect involves redeveloping existing structures that have been neglected due to environmental issues. Reusing bricks for flooring exemplifies a commitment to sustainability. This approach not only reduces construction waste but also honors the history of the materials. By giving new life to what was once discarded, the design establishes a link between past and present.

Functional Layout

The layout includes various spaces for different activities. These range from kitchens and living rooms to storage areas and communal zones. Each space is designed to encourage social interaction, while also providing privacy when needed. Outdoor green spaces are incorporated to accommodate recreational activities and gatherings, fostering a sense of community among residents.

Natural light enters the building through carefully planned openings, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere inside. As light changes throughout the day, it highlights the relationship between the spaces and the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the connection between architecture and nature in La Nostra Terra - The Splits.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
