05

The Tiny Kiwi Meditation Center is a well-considered retreat situated within a landscape that encourages peace and contemplation. Designed to accommodate four guests and one teacher, the center offers a space for meditation and reflection. The design concept integrates the built environment with nature, creating a calm and serene atmosphere that promotes both communal interaction and personal introspection.

Environmental Considerations

The layout features a circular shape that supports both group activities and solitary meditation. Essential environmental strategies include overhangs that provide shade during summer, while passive solar techniques allow for warmth from the sun in winter. These thoughtful features help reduce the need for mechanical heating and cooling, enhancing energy efficiency throughout the year.

Materiality

A focus on sustainability is clear in the choice of materials. The foundation uses stone and timber, which establishes a solid connection to the earth. The timber structure highlights renewable building practices, while the permeable glass walls foster a relationship with the surrounding nature. This connection enhances the meditation experience by inviting the outside in.

Structural Features

The center includes a reciprocal roof design that features large openings for natural airflow. This ensures comfortable conditions inside, allowing for a pleasant environment for meditation. A moveable altar allows for flexibility in meditation practices, making the space adaptable to different needs of its users.

Skylights are positioned to maximize natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting during the day. This design choice contributes to the ecological goals of the center while creating a welcoming atmosphere for all who visit.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
