The Kurgi Observation Tower is located in a hilly landscape, designed to connect the structure with its natural surroundings. It functions as an observation point, offering a space for visitors to appreciate the beauty of the area. The overall concept is based on a design that rises from the earth itself, merging with the topography and inviting people to engage with the environment around them.

Structural Configuration

The design features two main components: the ascent and the observation area. The ascent consists of four levels, accessed via a staircase integrated into a wall made of raw earth. This setup allows visitors to move gradually upward, experiencing different views along the way. Each level includes cantilevered platforms that extend outward, providing an opportunity to stop and take in the landscape from various angles.

Observation Area

At the top, the observation area serves as a refuge and a terrace for panoramic views. A unique aspect of this space is a void that creates a feeling of lightness, distinguishing it from the solid base below. This contrast enhances the experience of the ascent, leading visitors into an area that feels both open and secure. The refuge includes a cozy lounge area around a wood stove along with a dining space that encourages relaxation and social interaction in a natural setting.

Material Selection

The materials used for the tower are carefully chosen to resonate with the environment. The primary structural walls are made from raw earth, employing the adobe technique. This approach allows for the use of earth sourced directly from the site, which promotes sustainability and creates a textured surface that blends with the landscape. Additionally, a central metal structure supports the elevator and staircase, ensuring easy movement while maintaining the strength of the design.

Unique Spatial Experience

As visitors navigate the levels of the tower, they encounter different perspectives that highlight the changing shapes and colors of the landscape. Each landing offers a chance to pause and reflect on the surroundings. The experience culminates at the top, where the observation area affords expansive views, framed by carefully placed openings. Here, visitors find themselves surrounded by a blend of earth and sky, emphasizing the relationship between the structure and its natural context.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
