Rammed Earth Walls Framing a Wildlife Sanctuary with Geothermal Cooling

Project in-detail

Rammed earth walls and geothermal cooling systems create an environmentally responsive facility that facilitates wildlife observation and education within the wetlands ecosystem.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rammed earth walls provide thermal stability and integrate with the local landscape.
02
Geothermal cooling slots enhance energy efficiency while reducing mechanical reliance.
03
A fountain courtyard invites native wildlife, creating an interactive observation space.
04
Design elements draw from traditional Arabic architecture, fostering cultural connection.
05
The layout allows for panoramic views of the wetlands, enhancing visitor engagement.

The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center at Al Wathba Wetlands Reserve serves as a place for visitors to learn about and observe local wildlife. The center is designed to allow guests to connect with the natural environment surrounding it. Its layout brings together educational and recreational spaces, providing insights into the delicate ecosystem of the wetlands.

Site Layout

The visitor center features a well-planned layout that enhances the experience for everyone who visits. Key areas include an entrance, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) facilities, a gift shop, an information center, and office spaces. The ground floor has various amenities, such as a live display, a fountain courtyard, toilets, a terrace, and a small café. Each space is created to promote interaction between visitors and the surrounding wetlands. On the second floor, a journey inspired by bird migration encourages exploration through different exhibits, including “Begin the Journey,” “Fly Up,” “Journey (Indoor Exhibit Area),” and “Experience the Real World.”

Interior Design Elements

Inside the visitor center, an interior fountain acts as a representation of the wetlands. This feature incorporates real vegetation, making it a central point that connects the indoor spaces to the landscape outside. The live wildlife display fountain courtyard draws on traditional Arabic design, allowing for expansive views and welcoming birds into the area. The purpose of this design is to enhance visitor interaction with both the interior and nature, creating a fluid experience.

Sustainability Strategies

Sustainability plays an important role in the design. The roof utilizes a waffle module created from scaffolding, which helps with structural performance while reducing waste. Geothermal cooling slots are also included, taking inspiration from traditional cooling techniques. The use of rammed earth walls helps manage temperature changes, which aids in energy efficiency and minimizes the need for cooling systems.

Design Impact and Experience

The layout allows for panoramic views of the wetlands, which enhances the visitor experience. A terraced water pond located near the curtain wall window attracts various bird species, creating opportunities for close observation. By combining different design elements, the center promotes a strong connection between people and the natural environment, encouraging a greater appreciation for the wetlands and the life within them.
