The Latvian Lake House is located close to Černostes Lake and serves as a residence and creative hub for two families of artists. The design is rooted in the idea of fostering a strong connection with nature and encouraging community interaction. With two main volumes separated by a glass gallery, the layout allows for both private spaces and communal areas, supporting artistic exploration in a peaceful setting.

Spatial Organization

The house consists of two distinct sections, connected by a transparent gallery that provides both separation and connection. This setup allows each family to enjoy their own space while still promoting social interaction. The lowest volume, facing the lake, serves as the workspace. Here, artists can fully engage with their surroundings, drawing inspiration directly from nature.

Natural Light and Ventilation

Natural light is a key feature of the design. Tall ceilings and large openings create bright, open interiors. Sliding timber windows provide views of the lake and ensure good airflow throughout the spaces, enhancing comfort without relying heavily on artificial cooling. The design carefully considers seasonal changes, allowing for flexibility in how residents use both indoor and outdoor areas.

Material Choices

Materials used in the construction emphasize sustainability and local relevance. Rammed earth walls offer thermal insulation, helping to retain warmth in the winter months. Pine wood steps create an easy transition from the outdoors to indoor spaces. Terrazzo tile flooring adds durability and a polished finish to shared living areas, reflecting traditional building practices from Latvia.

Community and Artistic Engagement

A communal art gallery anchors the project, situated between the two primary volumes. This space not only hosts exhibitions but also serves as a gathering place for the families. It encourages collaboration and fosters a sense of community among the artists. By integrating spaces for both living and displaying art, the design emphasizes the importance of artistic practice while nurturing interpersonal connections.

The large sliding windows with their simple designs enhance the experience of the natural environment. They allow light and views to flow into the interior, bringing the beauty of the lake and its surroundings directly into everyday life.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
