5 key facts about this project
The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Centre is located in the wetlands of Abu Dhabi. It acts as a center for visitors, encouraging engagement with the local environment. The design is inspired by the traditional Bedouin Tent, reinterpreted in a modern way. This connection to local culture and nature is evident in both form and function.
Sustainable Design
The Centre addresses the hot climate of the region, where temperatures frequently rise to around 40 degrees Celsius in the summer. A highly insulated tensile roof is used to create comfortable indoor conditions. Along the eastern and western sides, reflective ponds help to lower the surrounding temperature. Together, these elements work to enhance the comfort of visitors throughout the year.
Spatial Organization
A focus on accessibility shapes the Center's layout. Most pathways run at ground level, making it easy for all visitors to navigate the space. An elevated viewing platform offers expansive views of the wetlands, inviting visitors to connect with nature. Central lift cores support movement throughout the building, ensuring that all areas are reachable regardless of the weather.
Material Choices
The materials used in the design include insulated PTFE roof membrane, laminated timber for structural support, composite timber for ceilings and decking, glass for views and light, and rammed earth for internal walls. These materials support the Centre’s aesthetic goals while enhancing its thermal performance. The choices reflect durability and a strong relationship with the natural surroundings.
Artistic Expression
The building's form draws on elements found in its environment, such as the wings of flamingos and the shape of sand dunes. This connection enriches the visitor experience and strengthens the link between the structure and its ecological context. The smooth, flowing lines of the design echo this relationship, making the Centre both functional and an important part of Abu Dhabi's ecological and cultural landscape.
