05
Charred wooden shingles offer both aesthetic appeal and increased durability against weathering.

Cabin for Two is an architectural project situated at coordinates 37.27 degrees south, designed to create a harmonious relationship between its occupants and the natural landscape. This residential structure redefines the traditional cabin concept by integrating modern materials with elements of vernacular architecture. The design aims to serve as both a functional dwelling and a reflective retreat, encouraging a deeper connection with the surrounding environment.

The project features a layout organized into key functional areas: an entrance, dining space, dwelling area, resting spaces, and two outdoor decks, one for living and one for gathering. Each area is purposefully designed to facilitate interactions, both within the cabin and with the outside landscape.

Materiality plays a significant role in the project's architecture. The shell functions as the exterior protective layer, while the husk serves as the breathable outer skin of the cabin. Essential structural components such as the fin and spine contribute to both aesthetics and functionality. The use of 10mm Black Oxide Oil Finished Steel Flitch and rammed earth walls exemplifies the commitment to durability while maintaining a tactile connection to the ground.

Unique Design Approaches

Cabin for Two departs from conventional cabin designs by emphasizing the experience of occupying the space. Fully operable facades allow for optimal ventilation and an unobstructed sensory experience of the natural environment. This design strategy blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living, creating an immersive atmosphere that encourages occupants to engage with seasonal changes.

The cabin's roof is intentionally sloped, optimizing natural light and managing rainwater effectively while minimizing the need for artificial climate control. This climate-responsive approach promotes energy efficiency. The ergonomic organization of spaces facilitates a flow that aligns with the occupants' daily activities, enhancing comfort without compromising simplicity.

Architectural Elements and Functionality

The cabin's architectural elements support its intended functions. The entrance provides a transitional zone to experience both indoor comfort and outdoor expansiveness. The dining area integrates culinary practices with scenic vistas, while the living and resting spaces are designed for relaxation and reflection. The Meeting Deck and Living Deck serve as extensions of these internal spaces, offering outdoor environments for gathering and leisure.

The careful selection of materials, such as rammed earth that connects to the site's geology, reinforces the cabin's groundedness in its surroundings. The cabin's structural features, including the spine acting as a thermal regulator, highlight the thoughtful engineering that ensures durability and resilience against environmental factors.

Cabin for Two exemplifies a contemporary approach to architecture that focuses on functionality through a minimalist lens, fostering a meaningful interaction with nature. The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
