5 key facts about this project
### Overview
Located in the Serra d’Aire e Candeeiros region of Portugal, "The Olive Pit" is designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings while promoting the cultural significance of olive production. The project focuses on creating a space that fosters community engagement and appreciation of local agricultural practices, aiming to serve both as a residence for the Verde family and a center for educational and social activities related to olive oil.
### Design Strategy
The structure comprises two main volumes, encompassing 270 square meters of interior space, strategically designed to enhance views and optimize natural light while ensuring effective ventilation. The layout includes distinct zones that separate private and communal areas: residential spaces with four en-suite bedrooms, central gathering areas for social events and community engagement, and functional service areas, including kitchens and storage. Key features such as a living room designed for interaction, an educational showroom for olive oil production, and a meditation room promote diverse uses while maintaining a connection to the surrounding landscape.
### Material Selection
The design incorporates a variety of materials selected for their sustainability and aesthetic qualities. Limestone forms the foundation and landscaping elements, while Corten steel is utilized for structural components and accents. Aluminum frames the windows, and concrete is employed in flooring. Internal finishes include light oak and maritime pine woods, complemented by rammed earth walls providing thermal mass and appeal. Each material choice reflects an intention to blend with the local environment, establishing a sense of place and ecological responsibility.
