Three rammed earth volumes rise thoughtfully from the landscape, framing panoramic vineyard views while creating a versatile space for community gatherings.
5 key facts about this project
01
Three distinct rammed earth volumes create a monolithic presence.
02
Large sliding windows enhance the connection to the vineyard views.
03
The design aligns with the existing buildings for contextual continuity.
04
Interior spaces feature a gradual change in ceiling height for spatial variation.
05
The terrace serves as an extension of the indoor gathering area.

Situated at Quinta do Monte d'Oiro, the design is rooted in its vineyard surroundings and focuses on creating a gathering space. The overall concept emphasizes the connection between built structures and nature. Traditional Portuguese architectural elements inform the design while modern principles are employed to enhance the experience of visitors.

Architecture Concept
The design aims to build a strong relationship between the environment and the structure itself. The entrance is welcoming and framed by solid rammed earth walls, providing a sense of intimacy. As guests move inside, they encounter a ceiling that gradually rises, revealing expansive views of the vineyard. This thoughtful layout allows for an experience that blends internal and external spaces fluidly.

Spatial Layout
Three distinct volumes made from rammed earth form the main structure. Their solid presence interacts with a timber framework that adds a lighter touch. By using these materials, the design establishes a connection to the surrounding landscape and ensures durability. The alignment of these volumes takes into account the historical context of the site, creating a coherent identity that encourages movement and interaction among users.

Connection to Nature
Large sliding windows play a significant role in bringing the outdoors into the interior. These windows can be fully opened, allowing natural light to pour in and offering uninterrupted views of the vineyard. This design choice creates a transition to an exterior terrace, enhancing the experience of being in nature. Visitors are invited to engage with the landscape fully, as the terrace serves as an extension of the built space.

Materiality and Detail
Rammed earth and timber are the primary materials in use, essential for defining the character of the design. The solid entrance and glazed perimeter work together to maintain openness while still offering a sense of privacy. These elements invite exploration, leading visitors to key areas like the terrace, where one can take in the beautiful vineyard views. The design pays careful attention to both user experience and environmental context, emphasizing the interaction between space and landscape.
