"Terra d'Oiro" (Golden Earth) is a proposal for a wine tasting room located in the Quinta do Monte d'Oiro vineyard. Positioned on the edge of a hill, the design takes advantage of views across the countless rows of grapevines. The overall concept highlights the connection between the structure and its surrounding landscape, creating a unique space focused on the experience of wine tasting.

Architectural Concept

The design emphasizes the relationship between the tasting room and the vineyard. By placing the building to enhance views, it encourages visitors to engage with the natural surroundings. The use of rammed earth for the facades provides a robust and lasting material that reflects the identity of the region’s agriculture while also contributing to the building's thermal performance.

Materiality and Sustainability

Rammed earth is featured in the Northeast and Southeast facades, sourced from the site itself. This choice reinforces the connection between the building and its landscape. The large openings on the Southwest and Northwest facades allow for plenty of natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere while also establishing a visual link to the outdoors. The design aims to be energy efficient through its use of natural materials.

Interior Design and Functionality

The interior is designed to be functional and welcoming. A long table, seating up to 30 people, is positioned to face the vineyard, enhancing the connection to the landscape. The tabletop, crafted from plywood with a ceramic tile panel, adds a unique touch to the space. Additionally, features like an accent wall and a wood stove bring warmth to the interior, fostering a cozy environment for visitors to relax and enjoy the wines.

Cultural Context and Heritage

Inside, a custom tile panel serves as a reference to Portuguese culture, grounding the design in its geographical context. Eucalyptus plywood cabinets provide storage while maintaining a clean and simple look. The organization of the interior allows for practicality while ensuring that the focus remains on the surrounding views and the enjoyment of wine tasting.

Located against the backdrop of the vineyard, this tasting room offers a design that encourages exploration. It provides a tangible connection to the land and a focus on the experience of wine culture in the region.
