*Elated Melancholia* is located in Quinta do Monte D'Oiro, a region known for its wine production. The building functions as a wine tasting room, designed to engage visitors in both sensory exploration and personal reflection. Inspired by the themes of Luis Buñuel’s film *Viridiana*, the concept fuses ideas of joy and sorrow, creating an immersive experience. The design connects guests with the surrounding landscape, inviting them to appreciate the wine not just in taste but as part of a larger narrative.

Architectural Form

The structure features a distinct distorted shape that gives it a unique presence. This form helps to create a feeling of time standing still, encouraging visitors to pause and absorb their surroundings. With open spaces and clear sightlines, the layout allows for easy movement throughout the area. Each corner of the room leads to new views, keeping the experience dynamic and engaging for all who enter.

Pathway Integration

An L-shaped stepped pathway connects various areas of the site. Starting from the courtyard, which faces a chapel, the pathway guides guests directly to the tasting room entrance and beyond to the property’s exit. This design not only improves accessibility but also invites a connection with the nearby vineyards. Walking the path, visitors feel a sense of continuity between the building and the landscape around it.

Vertical Connectivity

A twin staircase links the tasting room with the upper-level winery, creating a relationship between the two spaces. This vertical movement allows visitors to enjoy views of the vineyards from different heights. As guests transition through these spaces, they can appreciate the landscape in new ways, enhancing their interactions with the wine and the building as a whole.

Material Choices

Rammed earth and limestone are the main materials used, chosen for their natural qualities that tie into the environment. The distorted glass façades reflect the vineyards outside, drawing their beauty into the interior. The metallic ceiling adds depth to the space, altering how light interacts and influences the atmosphere within the tasting room.

Within this crafted environment, each detail contributes to a rich experience. The careful balance of materials and design invites a thoughtful connection to both the wine and the natural world outside.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
