The Monte d'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is located in Quinta Do Monte d'Oiro, an area known for its rich history in winemaking. Designed to enhance the wine tasting experience, the building reflects a deep connection to the craft of viticulture. It focuses on key aspects like terroir, artistry, and skills involved in creating wine, making it a welcoming space for visitors to explore the nuances of the process.

Design Concept

The design combines important elements of winemaking, such as terroir, art, barrels, weather, skill, and time. The Tasting Area serves as the main space, where an entryway dramatically reveals a feature bar illuminated by a circular skylight. This approach allows natural light to fill the area, promoting a bright and open environment. With seating arrangements for up to 30 visitors, the layout fosters interaction and shared experiences, led by a knowledgeable sommelier.

Materiality

Sustainability is a key focus in the design, with the use of rammed earth construction, locally referred to as taipa. This method is chosen for its energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Besides being environmentally friendly, the choice of rammed earth enhances the tactile feel of the interior and provides sound insulation. These qualities contribute to a practical and comfortable setting for tastings, supporting the overall goal of enhancing visitor engagement.

Reflection Pool

A notable feature of the Tasting Room is the Reflection Pool. This pool represents the influence of weather and time on the quality of wine, creating a calming focal point in the space. It also helps to control the indoor climate, ensuring a pleasant atmosphere for guests throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy the serene reflections on the water’s surface, which deepen their connection to nature and the factors that influence winemaking.

Integration with Landscape

The design takes great care to connect with the surrounding landscape. The arrangement of spaces is intended to draw visitors’ attention to the vineyard and the views outside. The thoughtful layout encourages guests to appreciate the beauty of the natural setting, enhancing understanding of the environment that nurtures the wines. This interaction enriches the overall experience, deepening the appreciation for the wines produced in the region.

The interior is warm and inviting, featuring textures that emphasize the rammed earth construction. Soft lighting complements the natural colors, creating a cozy atmosphere. As the sun moves, the reflection of clouds and trees on the surface of the Reflection Pool changes, adding an ever-evolving aspect to the space. This dynamic detail connects the experience of wine tasting with the natural rhythms of the surrounding landscape.
