Earth Waves is an architectural project designed as a hospice for the terminally ill, situated in Eastern Crete, Mediterranean. The design reflects a deep understanding of the relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape, incorporating elements that promote healing and comfort. This project serves a vital function, providing a supportive space for patients and their families during a critical time.

The design embodies a flowing, wave-like form that integrates with the natural topography. It employs environmental sustainability principles through the selection of materials that not only enhance structural integrity but also offer a sensory connection to the local context. The use of rammed earth, reinforced concrete, terracotta, and rustic metal elements establishes a visual and tactile bond with the surrounding environment.

The building's layout includes essential components such as a lobby and reception area that facilitate a welcoming entry for visitors. Therapy rooms, designed for both individuals and groups, leverage natural daylight and views of the landscape to create a calming atmosphere. A library/common area promotes social interaction, while a chapel offers a serene space for reflection and prayer. Additionally, the on-site restaurant aims to foster community through shared meals, utilizing local herbs to enhance the dining experience.

Unique design approaches are central to Earth Waves. The integration of multi-sensory experiences invites users to interact with their environment in a meaningful way, supporting mental and emotional healing. The architectural form, characterized by gentle curves and organic shapes, is a significant departure from conventional hospice designs, which often rely on more rigid, institutional forms. This project prioritizes a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging exploration and engagement with nature.

The careful selection of materials further distinguishes Earth Waves from typical healthcare facilities. Rammed earth is not only sustainable but also provides excellent thermal properties, contributing to the overall comfort of the space. The combination of natural materials and thoughtful architectural details ensures that the hospice is both functional and intimately connected to the Cretan landscape.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
