The observation tower at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is located in the expansive desert of Abu Dhabi. This structure is designed to serve as a gathering point for visitors, providing them with a chance to connect with the unique landscape of the wetlands. The overall vision for the tower focuses on creating an inviting space that encourages exploration, interaction, and accessibility for all.

Design Concept and Form

The design centers around the idea of connecting architecture with nature. The observation tower features a walkway that rises freely and is supported by slender columns and beams, which reflect the shape of a flamingo standing in the water. This inspiration from local wildlife helps the tower blend into the environment, inviting visitors to engage with the wetlands more closely.

Circulation and Accessibility

Accessibility is a major consideration in the design. The pathways are laid out in an easy-to-navigate way, enabling smooth movement for all visitors, including those with disabilities. The gently spiraling walkways naturally guide users towards the main observation area. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that exploring the diverse ecological features of the reserve is both enjoyable and uncomplicated.

Water Feature and Engagement

At the heart of the observation tower is a central water feature that enhances the visual appeal and reinforces the connection to the natural surroundings. This water element invites visitors to pause and reflect, deepening their appreciation for the tranquil environment. It also serves as a focal point for engagement, allowing users to observe the diverse wildlife that thrives in the wetlands.

Materiality and Sustainability

Rammed earth is used in the project as a key material, supporting the aim for sustainability and environmental balance. This choice not only enhances the visual character of the tower but also respects the geological conditions of the site. Additionally, shading elements are included throughout the structure to promote visitor comfort and to enhance the experience of being surrounded by nature.

The observation deck provides panoramic views of the wetland reserve. Visitors can see a variety of plants and animals that inhabit this protected area. The design integrates form and function, promoting a relationship between the structure and its environment that respects and highlights the significance of the wetlands.
