The Spirala Ecological Village is located in Portugal and emphasizes a strong connection to nature within a community-focused design. Inspired by the shapes of sea shells, the building reflects an architectural style that merges practicality with an appreciation for the environment. The community home serves as a gathering space where residents can engage in various activities while surrounded by an organic and inviting structure.

Design Concept

The core concept revolves around the spiral form, which is derived from the natural beauty of sea shells. This design not only offers aesthetic appeal but also facilitates unity with the surrounding landscape. The building’s shape and interior configurations encourage interaction among residents, creating an environment that promotes togetherness and shared experiences.

Materials and Sustainability

Rammed earth is used as the primary material for construction. It offers durability and excellent thermal properties. This choice underscores a commitment to sustainability, as rammed earth helps keep indoor temperatures steady throughout different seasons. The thick walls of the building provide insulation, helping to maintain comfort in both summer and winter while reducing the need for additional heating or cooling systems.

Passive Design Strategies

To enhance energy efficiency, the design incorporates various passive techniques. Sun shades are positioned according to the sun’s path in the sky, effectively managing how much sunlight enters the space. This design allows natural light to flood in while minimizing heat gain. The kitchen is centrally located to help distribute warmth generated from cooking, further contributing to a comfortable indoor climate.

Spatial Arrangements

The multifunctional hall is designed to be flexible, allowing for a variety of uses. Whether it’s a yoga class, dance session, or community meeting, the space can easily adapt to different activities. This versatility is key to encouraging engagement among residents. Open areas facilitate movement and collaboration, echoing the smooth lines of the building itself.

The detailed design of the shell structure adds a unique touch. Its curves invite exploration and create a welcoming atmosphere, blending indoor spaces with the natural landscape outside. Each element is thoughtfully considered to enhance the experience of community living while remaining sensitive to the surrounding environment.
