5 key facts about this project
The Vale de Moses Masterplan offers a thoughtful design that integrates yoga practice within the picturesque setting of the Serra de Estrela mountains in Portugal. With a focus on 'Shinrin Yoku,' or Forest Bathing, the project highlights the benefits of being immersed in nature. Moses Sanctus, the main facility, is positioned on the highest terrace, allowing for expansive views of the valley while connecting deeply to the surrounding environment.
Site Integration
Moses Sanctus demonstrates a careful approach to site integration. The design respects the existing terrain and the natural elements, particularly the local pine trees. By minimizing disruption, the architecture blends with the landscape. Gardens encircle the building, supporting local plant life and growing herbs and tea. This design choice enhances biodiversity and provides a peaceful atmosphere, giving visitors a sense of calm while practicing yoga.
Architectural Flow
The main yoga room features transparent boundaries that dissolve the line between inside and outside. This arrangement encourages a constant interaction with the natural environment. It maximizes views and lets the landscape become part of the yoga experience. An external corridor wraps around a Zen-style courtyard, which invites social gatherings around a central stone fire pit. This space encourages community interaction and supports the project’s emphasis on togetherness.
Sustainability and Material Choices
Sustainability is a key focus in the construction of Moses Sanctus. Timber frame techniques facilitate community involvement during the building process, helping to strengthen local ties. The choice of materials includes cork, plywood, ceramic roof tilings, stone gabion walls, and rammed earth. Each material is selected to resonate with the natural landscape, fostering a warm and approachable atmosphere.
At the back of the property, a small timber pavilion provides a private space for individual yoga sessions. This structure offers stunning views of the surrounding valley, creating an intimate setting for reflection. It embodies the project's aim to connect users with nature and facilitate personal experiences in a tranquil environment.
