Rammed Earth Retreat Surrounded by Pine Forest and Elevated Yoga Spaces

Project in-detail

Constructed with rammed earth and strategically elevated, the retreat offers expansive views of the surrounding pine forest while providing a serene environment for yoga practice.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with rammed earth walls for thermal stability and durability.
02
Features a natural water reservoir to enhance indoor climate control.
03
Elevated structure minimizes environmental impact on the surrounding landscape.
04
Incorporates three outdoor platforms for extended interaction with nature.
05
The northern arch offers panoramic views, enhancing the yoga experience.

The yoga house is positioned on a steep slope in the mountainous center of Portugal, designed to create a retreat that emphasizes well-being and a strong connection to nature. The design concept reflects a careful consideration of the site’s topography, allowing the building to blend into the environment. Elevated above the ground, it minimizes its impact on the landscape while ensuring that users feel an immediate bond with the surrounding pine forest.

Architecture Concept

The structure takes the form of two floating levels connected by glass elements. This arrangement allows natural light and fresh air to freely enter the spaces, enhancing the experience inside. The northern arch contains the yoga room, oriented to take full advantage of the stunning views. A water reservoir, which collects rainwater, supplements the building’s sustainability efforts, while mechanical air circulation helps maintain a comfortable climate within the yoga space.

Structural Composition

The southern arch accommodates necessary functional areas such as storage, restrooms, and showers. Constructed with rammed earth walls, these spaces provide durability and effective temperature regulation throughout the year. The contrast between these enclosed areas and the open yoga room offers a balanced experience, where functionality meets engaging design.

Integration with Nature

Three platforms are cleverly integrated into the slope, serving as additional areas for retreat. These spots enhance the project by inviting users to immerse themselves in the natural landscape. By promoting outdoor engagement, the design encourages a deeper connection to the environment, extending the experience of tranquility beyond the indoor yoga practice.

Materials and Sustainability

The structure uses a lightweight framework supported by steel and wooden elements. Together, these materials provide necessary stability while maintaining a connection to the landscape. The roof features local slate, reflecting traditional building practices in the area and supporting sustainability through local sourcing. This choice of materials enhances both the visual appeal and practical function of the building.

An important design detail is the transition from the yoga room to the outdoors. Vast views invite nature inside, creating an atmosphere that encourages reflection and serenity. Thoughtful considerations about light, space, and proximity to nature culminate in a setting that promotes relaxation and connection.
