The Rammed Earth Pavilion is located in Phoenix, Arizona, close to a well-frequented hiking route. It functions as a resting spot for hikers while providing an engaging architectural experience that highlights the connection between man-made structures and the natural landscape. The design concept revolves around blending indoor and outdoor spaces, using visual axes to frame views of the mountains and the urban skyline of the city.

Design Concept

The layout of the pavilion is organized around a central octagonal space that serves as an exhibition area. This arrangement encourages interaction and engagement with the surrounding environment. The walls are positioned using a stellar grid, allowing for adaptations to different site conditions. This thoughtful approach creates a clear visual relationship between the pavilion and the landscape, enhancing how visitors experience both the design and its natural setting.

Materiality

Materials play an important role in the pavilion. The walls are made from rammed earth, which is locally sourced. This choice reflects the colors and textures of the region's soil and promotes sustainability by reducing the ecological impact. The use of rammed earth ties the building to the site, ensuring it fits harmoniously within the landscape while establishing a sense of belonging.

Spatial Relationships

The roof features elevated wooden plates, created through careful formwork techniques. This adds clarity to the pavilion's profile while allowing natural light to flood the central exhibition space. The interaction of light and shadow varies throughout the day, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

At the center of the pavilion, the visual axes enable a strong connection between the interior and exterior. These axes facilitate clear sightlines to the surrounding landscape, inviting visitors to actively engage with their environment. The design supports a deeper understanding of the relationship between the built form and nature, capturing the essence of the experience within the pavilion.
