Rammed Earth Overlooks Framing Volcanic Landscapes with Cross-Laminated Timber Pathways

Project in-detail

Constructed with cross-laminated timber and rammed earth, the visitor center enhances the experience of the surrounding volcano landscape through elevated pathways and strategically placed overlooks while serving as a hub for exploration and education about the unique geology of the area.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with cross-laminated timber and rammed earth for enhanced sustainability.
02
Elevated pathways provide unique perspectives of the volcanic landscape.
03
Integrated overlooks allow for educational engagement with geological features.
04
The design promotes seamless interaction between built and natural environments.
05
Strategically located access points connect visitors to existing hiking trails.

The Black Lava Fields Visitor Center is located in a landscape defined by volcanic formations and rugged terrain. Serving as a gateway to the surrounding lava fields, the center aims to connect visitors with this unique environment. The design integrates pathways that enhance the experience of exploring the landscape and emphasizes the geological history of the area.

Materiality and Sustainability

The choice of materials includes cross-laminated timber and rammed earth, supporting the aim of sustainability. Cross-laminated timber offers structural strength and is efficient to assemble, which helps to minimize the carbon impact of construction. Rammed earth complements the surroundings, blending with the landscape while providing effective insulation and a natural aesthetic that reflects the earth’s textures.

Visitor Engagement and Experience

A pathway is elevated above the ground, allowing it to weave through the center and lead visitors to key viewpoints. This design encourages movement and interaction with the landscape, framing views of notable geological features. It invites visitors to fully engage with the lava fields, appreciating their historical and natural significance.

Functional Layout

The site plan provides necessary amenities, including designated parking and easy access to existing hiking trails. The floor plan consists of important spaces, such as overlooks, dining areas, and workspaces for staff. Each part is arranged thoughtfully, ensuring that all functions serve the visitors well and that operations are efficient.

Surrounding Visual Relationships

The design creates strong visual links between the center and the lava fields, allowing visitors to experience the scenery in a new way. Overlooks are positioned to encourage pauses for contemplation, reinforcing the connection between the building and the natural environment. This relationship enhances the visitor's understanding of the geological landscape and enriches their overall experience while exploring.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
