The Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant is located near the Hverfjall Volcano and the Mývatn Nature Baths. It features a design that combines two distinct structures to create an outdoor space for various activities. The building’s layout encourages visitors to engage with the natural surroundings while enjoying the functions of the facility. The project emphasizes the relationship between constructed spaces and the landscape around them, offering a unique and enriching visitor experience.

Design Concept

The design takes advantage of the local topography by merging two different forms. One part of the building is a two-storey bar that is partially below ground. This choice helps it blend in with the landscape. The other part, the greenhouse, sits elevated. This positioning draws attention and invites visitors to discover what lies within. Together, these structures create a contrast that enhances the overall aesthetic and functional appeal of the site.

Visitor Journey

The journey starts as visitors approach from the parking area, guided by a retaining wall leading to the entrance. Upon entering, they find a lobby that features an exhibition space. This area offers educational insights into the geological features nearby. After exploring the lobby, guests ascend to the restaurant level via atrium stairs. The restaurant offers various dining options, each with views of the greenhouse and the natural landscape. This careful arrangement allows for a thoughtful progression through different spaces, adding depth to the overall experience.

Sustainability Strategies

Sustainability is a key part of the design. The project makes use of locally sourced materials to minimize its environmental impact. Rammed earth is used for the facades, made from soil found on site. This approach helps regulate temperature, keeping it warm in winter and cool in summer. Green roofs also contribute to energy efficiency. Furthermore, geothermal heating is incorporated to provide clean energy throughout the building.

Integration with Agriculture

The greenhouse serves a vital role by connecting the dining experience with local agricultural practices. Fresh vegetables and herbs are grown inside and used directly in the restaurant’s kitchen. Several dining spaces are situated within the greenhouse itself, allowing patrons to appreciate the plants around them. Large openings in the walls create visual connections to the outdoors, enhancing the overall ambiance and reinforcing the relationship between the dining experience and the natural environment.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
