UNBEND is a design located within the Vale De Moses retreat site, focusing on the practice of yoga in a natural environment. The project aims to create a space that enhances the connection between individuals and their surroundings. By using principles of movement and tranquility, the design invites practitioners into a deeper experience of both yoga and nature.

Roof Form and Spatial Organization

At the heart of UNBEND is a main area that reflects the size of a yoga mat. This central space encourages users to engage in their practice while feeling open and free. The roof design mimics the contours of the nearby hills, grounding the structure within its landscape. This not only integrates the building with its surroundings but also represents the fluidity and grace often found in yoga poses.

Sustainable Practices

The design prioritizes sustainability, which is evident in features like the open bathrooms that connect to the outdoor environment. These bathrooms employ a roof void that captures and collects rainwater, which can then be used for irrigation in gardens. This thoughtful approach to water management supports the site’s ecological balance and fosters a harmonious relationship between the built and natural environments.

Material Selection

Materials play a key role in UNBEND's identity. The use of rammed earth, timber, recycled concrete, and corrugated roof sheeting reflects a commitment to local sources and durability. These materials not only ensure the structure's longevity but also resonate with the project's ethos of authenticity and sustainability. Each material was chosen carefully to contribute to an overall sense of place.

The design invites yoga practitioners to immerse themselves in an environment where nature and movement coexist. The combination of natural materials and expanding spaces cultivates a place where individuals can connect deeply with their practice and the landscape around them.
