The Flamingo Cottage is situated in the Al Wathba Wetland Preserve and focuses on raising awareness about endangered species, particularly flamingos. Functioning as a visitor center, it provides educational opportunities for people to learn about the behaviors and traits of these birds. The design aims to capture the essence of flamingo behavior and represent it through an architectural form that can adapt to the local climate.

Concept and Design Integration

The design captures flamingo behavior, especially their standing gestures and social interactions. The modular facade reflects these gestures, allowing the structure to blend with its surroundings while responding to different climatic conditions. This flexibility is a crucial element of the design, enhancing both its visual appeal and practical use as a visitor center.

Sustainable Material Choices

Selecting materials reflects a commitment to sustainability. The Flamingo Cottage uses thatch and rammed earth, chosen for their cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. These materials contribute to energy-efficient construction and ensure that the building harmonizes with the natural environment. Rammed earth is particularly effective for maintaining temperature, which helps keep indoor spaces comfortable.

Visitor Experience and Engagement

The layout of the visitor center is designed to enhance interaction with the local wildlife. Educational and interactive zones invite guests to engage with exhibits that display the area's biodiversity. Viewing areas and display spaces create a journey for visitors, guiding them through the key messages of environmental conservation. Focusing on user experience is essential for fostering a deeper appreciation of the ecosystem.

Architectural Details

The Flamingo Cottage also features openable and fixed panels inspired by flamingo wings. This design promotes natural airflow and daylight throughout the space. This connection between the inside and outside enhances the visitor experience, making the journey through the center engaging and informative. The thoughtful arrangement of functional areas adds to the overall accessibility and usability of the building.
